Blinkx debuts mobile video search

Known for its online video search engine, Blinkx is now trying to wend its way into the mobile market.

The video search provider announced Wednesday a beta of a new Web site designed to let people find and play videos through their mobile devices. The new mobile site is geared toward any phone that has a Web browser and can play MP4 files, such as the Apple iPhone, Palm Pre, and Google Nexus One, among several others.

Differing from its standard Web site, Blinkx’s new site is optimized to display on a smaller device, the company said. A video wall offers nine thumbnails of the top news stories from across the Web–clicking on any of them leads to a video on that specific item. You can also browse a list of top videos by topic, including entertainment, technology, money, and sports.

But like its big brother, the new site’s core feature is its search capability. Search for a word or phrase, and Blinkx will display a list of links to relevant videos from different broadcast and media providers hosted elsewhere on the Web. The videos are streamed directly to your mobile device and pop up in any media player that supports MP4 files, such as Apple’s QuickTime.

“The number of handsets that are video-enabled has reached critical mass, and combined with the prevalence of high-speed mobile networks and new flat-rate data plans, mobile video finally makes sense for both consumers and media companies,” Blinkx founder and CEO Suranga Chandratillake said in a statement. “Blinkx’s extensive and varied library of shorter form, snackable video is the ideal format for consumption on-the-go.”

Blinkx is one of a number of sites that offer video searching on the Web, but it continues to expand periodically by kicking in new features such as music video searches, a desktop screensaver, and a service to help you track down full-length TV episodes.

Started in 2004, the company launched its video search in 2005 before going public in 2007. For the fiscal year ended this past March 31, Blinkx managed to slightly trim its net loss to $8.5 million from $8.8 million for the prior year, while sales shot up 140 percent to $33.6 million from $13.9 million a year ago (PDF). Gross profit also rose to $21.9 million from $9.8 million in the previous year.

Though the company was hit by higher operating costs, especially in research and development, it continues to see its video service catch on with more users. For the year, video streams rose by 186 percent in both the U.S. and the U.K., while daily video searches jumped 169 percent to 22.6 million this past March versus 8.4 million per day in March 2009.

The company said it also cut new distribution deals with partners such as Ask.com, for which it provides video searching, and Brazilian media company ELO, for which it’s creating a broadband TV offering.

But advertising revenue has been a key factor, especially this past year, as Blinkx saw a 112 percent gain in the number of brands that advertise with its service. With online video a hot market for advertising, Blinkx said it expects its business to further grow based on this momentum.

Facebook launches mobile site free of data charges

Facebook’s new mobile site, dubbed 0.facebook.com, is promising quick and data-charge-free access, though it’s only accessible through certain mobile carriers.

The popular social-networking site already offers a mobile site designed to display on smartphones and other portable gadgets. But the new 0.facebook.com is being targeted toward mobile users in specific countries who normally face data charges from their carriers when they hop online. Thanks to special deals with more than 50 mobile carriers across 45 different countries and regions, accessing 0.facebook.com won’t rack up any data charges.

The new site is designed to be faster than both Facebook’s core Web site and its traditional mobile site, but still offer the same features, according to the company’s blog. Users can view content, update their status, and keep in touch with their Facebook friends.

But the new mobile site won’t display photos by default. Users will have to click on a link to view any photo, and that’s where the free ride ends. Viewing a photo turns the data charges back on, as does clicking on a link to a third-party Web site. But a confirmation message will pop up notifying users that they may be charged if they leave 0.facebook.com.

The new mobile site will be available only in select places, including Brazil, Denmark, Greece, Hong Kong, India, and Turkey, and only through certain mobile carriers. But Facebook is promising that it will soon debut in other countries and with more carriers, including mobile operators in France and the U.K.

Mobile users outside of the supported countries and carriers can still access the Facebook through its standard mobile site or its site for touch-screen devices, though of course, data charges would still apply when going through a mobile carrier.

Cell phone, smartphone sales surge

Mobile phone and smartphone sales are on a roll, according to figures released Wednesday by market researcher Gartner.

In the first quarter, customers worldwide bought 314.7 million mobile phones, a 17 percent increase year over year. Smartphones sales specifically jumped 48.7 percent from the year-ago quarter, as 54.3 million units flew off the shelves.

Demand within mature markets and lower prices are part of the reason for the double-digit gains, Gartner said.

For the quarter, the usual mobile phone makers topped the ranks, with Nokia in first place with a 35 percent market share, followed by Samsung, LG, Research In Motion, and Sony Ericsson. But smaller players have also started to inch their way up the ladder. Hong Kong-based G-Five climbed into the list of top 10 mobile manufacturers worldwide, winning 1.4 percent of the market.

An array of other manufacturers across Asia also made a big dent in market share, collectively accounting for 19 percent. This surge had some impact on the top five companies, Gartner said, as their collective market share dropped to 70.7 percent in the first quarter from 73.3 percent a year ago.

Among the top five, Nokia continues to face strong competitive challenges. Although its midmarket phones sold well in the quarter, the company doesn’t yet have any high-end products driving sales. Its MeeGo-based devices and other higher-tier phones won’t have an impact until the end of the third quarter at the earliest, Gartner predicts. Nokia’s impending reorganization, announced last week, is a sign that the company is also trying to improve its standing among investors.

As for the rest of the pack, Samsung and RIM saw sales and market share grow during the quarter, while LG and Sony Ericsson watched their results drop.

In the smartphone arena, the industry enjoyed its strongest year-over-year sales growth since 2006, according to Gartner. Ranked by smartphone operating system, Nokia’s Symbian led the pack with a 44.3 percent slice of the market. But that was down from the 48.8 percent share a year ago.

Among the top five smartphone operating systems, the iPhone and Android were the only ones to enjoy growth in market share from a year ago. The first quarter proved to be Apple’s strongest yet, helped in part by overseas sales from mature regions such as the U.K, but also new markets such as China and South Korea. Demands for Android phones continued to grow in the first quarter, especially in North America, where sales jumped 707 percent from a year ago.

What does Gartner expect for the near term? Mobile e-mail, text-messaging, and social networking will continue to spark demand for smartphones and enhanced phones with hardware keyboards. But in Gartner’s view, the most successful companies will be the ones that control an integrated product in terms of operating system, hardware, and services. To stay competitive, manufacturers must integrate hardware, the user interface, the cloud, and social networks to continued to attract consumers, Gartner said.

Adobe hastens release of HTML5 developer tool

HTML5 developer tool

Even as opposition mounts against Adobe Systems’ Flash technology, the company is showing Wednesday it’s working hard to ensure it’s not the only arrow in its Web programming quiver.

At the Google I/O conference, Adobe Chief Technology Officer Kevin Lynch is expected to announce the release of an HTML5 update to Adobe’s Dreamweaver tool for creating Web sites. HTML5, a still-developing revision to the Web page standard, is a key part of the threat to Flash, but Adobe is indicating it’s willing to embrace the alternative.

Adobe has been telegraphing its interest in HTML5 and CSS3, a related new version of the Cascading Style Sheets standard for Web page formatting. But evidently the priority on such work is rising. After Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs trashed Flash, Lynch said , “We’re going to try and make the best tools in the world for HTML5.”

Earlier evidence emerged in March with Adobe demonstrations of CSS3 to handle screen size variation and of an HTML5 feature called Canvas for 2D graphics. At the time, Adobe said, “It won’t be in the next version of CS,” but now, just three weeks after the release of Dreamweaver CS5, the team is showing a faster response.

Adobe heard such an “overwhelming response” to the HTML5 and CSS3 demos from March “that we decided to roll it out after CS5,” said Lea Hickman, senior director of product management in Adobe’s Creative Solutions business, in an interview. “The excitement around HTML5 and all it brings is really exciting. Dreamweaver has a huge opportunity to help that move forward even faster. One thing missing now around HTML5 is great tooling.”

As is apparent from Adobe’s Flash-defending ad campaign, it’s not an either-or situation where Adobe will support only one of the two technologies.

The HTML5 update will be available on the Adobe Labs site. The update itself will let Web developers see and manage HTML5 coding without the software being baffled by the new syntax and options, Hickman said. In addition, the update includes a new version of the WebKit browser for live previewing of Web projects under development.

But it’s also clear that Adobe would like to be more of a leader and less of a follower when it comes to HTML5.

“We do participate in W3C [the World Wide Web Consortium that helps oversee HTML5 development] and sit on the HTML5 committee. I think that one of the things we should do is be more of a driver,” Hickman said. “There’s been a lot of drama around it. We have a team of folks who participate today, and I imagine they’ll participate even more in the future.”

With so much activity with Web standards, Adobe will have to work hard to keep up with the new specifications. But Hickman prefers that to stagnancy.

“Not much has happened with HTML for a number of years, and HTML5 does provide a lot of excitement about how we can move the Web forward,” she said. “HTML5 is a chance to focus on HTML again.”

The Dark Knight Trailer Spoof

Please Read To set the record straight about the last line in the spoof, it is not at all related about Heath Ledger, that never even crossed our minds until it was mentioned in the comments, we just thought the line was funny and could be related to heros in superhero movies. We would not make fun of a man who created the coolest and scariest villain to hit the movie screen in years. Give Heath Ledger the Oscar!! The trailer took a couple months of planning, finding locations and time to make the costumes, it took 3 weeks to film/edit the movie. We made this video just for fun because we are all very very excited about the real Dark Knight Movie and couldnt wait any longer to see it so we decided to make our own. There are real shots of Chicago in here, but all main scenes where filmed in the suburbs around the city. The deck of cards is a “Hooters” pack, so there is no nudity on them lol the blurry video makes it seem that way though and the music is all from the “Batman Begins” soundtrack For everyone wondering about the joker costume…we made the entire thing from scratch, alot of looking for the right colored fabrics and finding patterns that matched his clothing…it took a while to make, and the dress shirt we made a stencil of hexagons and drew them in. Directed, Produced and Edited By- Craig Deering Main Production Assistant- Kyle Bridges Written By- Craig Deering and Kyle Bridges Bruce Wayne/Batman- Joe Korbel The Joker- Craig Deering Harvey Dent- Dan Drake Jim
